Experiment 1

Sound Experiment

* Materials

* A police's siren circuit

* Soldering the electronics components

* Finished, not quite.
* Lack 2 pieces of ceramic capacitor 103.

* Connecting the circuit, speaker and the battery holder.
* The circuit doesn't work, lacking the ceramic capacitors.

* Infrared sensor (transmitter and receiver).

* Connecting the infrared sensor to power supplies.
* Working, indicated by the green light on the receiver.

* Since the sound is not working, change to an LED.
* LED lights up if something cross over between the two sensors.

* To 'Do' :
- Change LED to a sound circuit
- Experiment/ Try out on a real environment.

Candid day

Video and Photograph day

* Photos taken on Saturday, 30/08/08
* Bugis Area

* Photos taken Saturday, 30/08/08
* Orchard Area

* Based on observation, mostly the youth are the pedestrians who break the rules,most senior citizens due to the speed of the walking, prefer to wait till the traffic light turns green.
* Some cross when the light is red (when there is no passing car), some cross with some distances from the traffic light (middle of the road).

* Experiment:
- Building an infrared circuit, which produces sound when someone passes by. (mistake in connection, the circuit works the other way round)
- Using a visitor alarm instead (using LDR).

Experiment "NOT" successful :
- The experiment is to make them aware of what they had done.
- Video taking (they saw the video camera) during the experiment had made them aware that something is going to happen before they even going pass the sensor.

Battery

Wearable Technologies

* Battery change (Previous batteries were too big and heavy to have on the hat).

* It works.

Drawing

Hand Movement Drawing

* Extension of the previous exercise, now, the ball can move both vertically and horizontally.
* Drawing using hand movement.

Idea- Change!

Follow the rules - Break the rules

* Signage
* Traffic Light

* Idea :
- Pedestrian Traffic Light, user will be given chance to actually break the rule, user can cross the road while the light is still red, which will trigger a bright light (police light).

* Inspiration :
- Christian Moeller, Do Not Touch
- Peter Brinson & Julian Bleecker, Red Light Green Light

* Ideas (HELP) :
Mimi : Light won't do anything, sound will work much better
Aisyah : Using the car horn's sound
Edwin : Using police's siren
Melvin TKM : Using another sign

* To 'Do' :
- Experiment
- Videos on people who break the rules
- Create a 3D model

LED Hat

Wearable Technologies - First Try Out

* The hat (before embedding the LED).

* Metal wire.

* Using needle and metal wire to sew (the metal wire works as the thread).

*Sewing the metal wire on the hat.

* Tying the wire.

* Wire sewn on the hat.

* Another stripe of wire is sewn at the back of the hat.

* Front look of the hat.

* Wire sewn.

* Using bubble wrap to create an additional layer, so the two wires will not touch each other.

* Sewing the bubble wrap on the hat.

* Bubble wrap sewn.

* LED, resistor 100 Ω, and 1.5 volts batteries x 2.
* OFF - ON.

* Connecting the LED and the hat.

* Coiling the wire around the button on the hat.

* After the joining.
* OFF - ON.

* Wires around the hat.

* Hat after the joining.

* Soft button.
* OFF - ON.

New Proposal

Night Photosynthesis

* Exploring the idea of photosynthesis.
* Air purifier at night.
* Exploring the use of artificial sunlight.
* Investigating the use of photosynthesis in reducing the air pollution.
* Plants : Gerbera Daisy

- FAILED -
* Idea too naive, harming the other for own benefit.
* Photosynthesis is done during the day, making the plants to do photosynthesis at night is disturbing the plants life cycle.
* The light used for the photosynthesis is using electricity which uses coals and causes air pollution.

What is sound?

Sound_The definition

* What is sound?
- Vibrations that travel through the air
- Waves
- Frequency
- Resonance
- Something that can be heard
- Amplitude

* Human's sound frequency range : 20Hz - 20kHz
* f (frequency) = 1/T (Period)
* Higher amplitude - louder

Achievable and unachievable

Beautifying an available program

* Given a slit scan program and beautify it in your own way.

* Slit scan program that detects movement.
* Final result.

* Assignment 2 : "If you were to have all the abilities in the world, how can you make use of the slit scan program?"

ReThink, ReDesign

Proposal

* How the idea goes so far :
- Lack in narration, scenario not strong enough.
- Idea too broad and loose.
- Needs development.
- Proposed idea, too straightforward.
- Lack in interaction

* To 'Do' :
- Rewrite the proposal, due 23/08/08
- Rethink and develop the idea.
- Redesign the object.
- Create scenario.

* Keywords (from Rashid) : PERIODIC TABLES, trapping the elements.

Dumb Writing

Major Interactive

* Mind-mapping

* An idea on showing how human helps in the photosynthesis and decreasing the effect of global warming.
* Idea :
- A leaf-shaped object, this will be the leaf where the photosynthesis happens.
- On the leaf, there are a few holes, these holes will be the stomata, where the air comes in and out.
- This big leaf is divided to 4 parts.
- Each stoma is equipped with a tube with fan inside.

* How it works :
- The leaf started with yellow colour.
- If user approaches the leaf, the closest stomata will open the holes. (User produces CO2, the stomata open to absorb)
- If the user moves away, the stomata will close and the other closest stomata will open.
- Each part of the leaf,in which its stomata have opened, that part of leaf will turn green.
- When all the leaf is in green colour, all the stomata will open and wind will blow up. (Photosynthesis, O2 is produced)

Wearable items

Ideas

* Weather hat

* Idea 1# :
- It is a hat with straw hat shaped. The flat part is divided to four.
- It will stay as a straw hat during raining.
- The 4 flat pieces will join to one, stacking each other when it's dry.

* Idea 2# :
- It is a hat with straw hat shaped.
- It will stay as a straw hat during raining.
- The flat part will fold itself up when it's not raining making it looks like a sailor hat.

* Earring(s) :
* Idea 1# :
- The previous sound amplifier.

* Idea 2# :
- Earrings that blinks depends on the speed of the heartbeat.
